Contributing to the development of quality culture in Sierra Leone: Public and private personnel trained

Between February 24 and March 5, 2020, WACOMP-Sierra Leone through funding from the European Union and the support of UNIDO partners, trained over a hundred people on quality management system standards. In a series of training events, twenty representatives from ministries and national agencies, twenty-five members from the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau (SLSB), representatives of nineteenSMEs, forty-five higher education lecturers and sixteen staff from the National Water Resources (NWR) improved their understanding of quality management. The trainings were conductedby UNIDO International Expert, Dr. Nigel Croft andWACOMP Chief Technical Advisor (CTA) in Sierra Leone, Dr. Shaukat Hussain.

At SLSB, its Executive Director, professor Thomas Yormahstressed the importance of the continuous technical support that UNIDO provides in Sierra Leone, emphasizing the mandate of the SLSB to ensure the maintenance of quality and standards. According to him “This reaffirmsour wish to continue the close cooperation with UNIDO as a preferredpartner of developing countries for upgrading of quality infrastructure”. Dr. Shaukat presented the WACOMP program and its national component in Sierra Leone. The participants acknowledged the importance ofISO 9001 principles for any organization, whether public or private, to acquire the required knowledge, master best practices and meet the requirements for obtaining ISO 9001 certification.

 At the University of Sierra Leone (USL), UNIDO conveyed the importance of quality management and how it canultimately benefit Sierra Leone as a whole. The participants recognized the importance of integrating quality concepts into all undergraduate education, and in particular scientific, medical and commercial engineering courses. The USL Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Nonie, confirmed this by saying that the training was timely for teachers, "because the country has a lot of work to do to improve in this area."At the end of the training, the participants committed to disseminatethe knowledge acquired within their respective institutions,whichaccording to them, should guarantee a better anchoring of the quality culture in their work. The CTA and the management of the University subsequentlyheld a sideline meeting and agreed to keep contacts in order to determine the future avenues of co-operation.In particular, the USL representativeshighlighted their objective to develop and launch courses in the field of quality management.
